Dr Iniyaval (Ini) Thevathasan MBBS(Hons) FRANZCOG CMFM DDU(O&G) is a maternal fetal medicine subspecialist obstetrician based in Melbourne. She currently holds public appointments at The Royal Women’s Hospital in Parkville and the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital in St Albans. Ini works across all aspects of complex and high-risk pregnancy care, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team, to care for women with medical disorders in pregnancy and in the diagnosis and management of fetal anomalies. She is also involved in caring for women who have experienced recurrent pregnancy loss, provides a pre-pregnancy counselling service and is involved in the prevention of preterm birth and cares for women with multiple pregnancies. She has a special interest in the impact of inflammatory bowel disease on pregnancy and has an honourary position at the pregnancy inflammatory bowel disease clinic at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. She also performs tertiary level obstetrics and gynaecology ultrasound. Ini strongly believes in patient-centered and inclusive healthcare practicing evidence based medicine so that women can come to an informed decision about their pregnancy.

Ini is passionate about teaching and training of medical students, junior medical staff and midwives. She teaches University of Melbourne medical students at both The Royal Women’s Hospital and Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital. She is a training supervisor for junior doctors currently undertaking their obstetrics and gynaecology training through The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Ini is also a teacher for the ALSO course aimed at teaching emergency obstetric skills and team work to the multidisciplinary team. She is interested in researching the impact of antenatal corticosteroids, used for fetal lung maturation, particularly on women with pre-existing diabetes. Ini is also fluent in Tamil and comfortable providing care in this language. During her spare time, Ini enjoys reading, trying out new recipes, travelling and spending time with her cheeky golden retriever, Scout.
